Thoughts on Steve Aoki's Gig!

Ok so I went to see Steve Aoki last night in the Button Factory!! For those of you who dont know Steve Aoki he is a famous electro music dj!

I have been to see many djs in the past, and in comparrison to the others Steve Aoki suprised me.. A lot! However in both a good and a bad way!As he is so well known I was expecting him to be up there with the best. However his dj/mixing skills etc just wernt up to scratch.. He had a ok playlist of songs but I felt he just played one after the other with no real technique. Not that it mattered all that much to me, I didnt feel let down by it or anything I was just suprised!

Although he made up for the lack of effort that was put into his set in other ways.. The main one being entertaining the croud!!!Steve Aoki was absolutly crazy.. He was mental!! After being on the stage for litreally two seconds he jumped into the croud and he did this a few times throughout the show! When he was preparing I saw the people backstage bring out loads of drinks and bottles of chapagne for him, and I innitally thought god he must be really high maintenance! However I soon found out during the show that this was not the case. He poured tonnes of drink out into the audience during the show. He had so much energy.. He never seemed to ever be behind his decks he was constantly at the front of the stage bouncing around and interacting with the fans (whom some were just as crazy).

Although this may not suprise you, like if you think of the many heavy metal/rock fans/bands, im sure this type of entrtainment at those concerts is the norm. However in all my times going to see similair djs eg; Justice, MSTRCRFT, Crookers, Boys Noize etc, all of them stayed behind their decks the entire show and concentrated purely on their djing, none of them came out like Steve Aoki and bounced around. Although I think for the other DJ's their reason for staying in the background was to try create some type of cool image.

And even though Steve Aoki djing wasnt the best and his song choice was just ok, I still think I enjoyed myself more at his gig than at any other. So I came to the conclusion that the entertainment from the muscian is more important to me than the quality of the music itself! Suprising!
